August 2014

Intro to the new school year:
I remember the first time I did this. I thought ‘How will it go?’, ‘Will I be alright?’ Butterflies are such beautiful creatures, so lively and yet so fragile. We know the transformation caterpillars go through in order to become butterflies. And when they fly, they flutter around seemingly with such joy and excitement. So much so that we are captivated by its movements. I wonder if they know just how beautiful they are…?

‘Butterflies’ is also a term used to describe an uneasy feeling that we all get in our stomach when we feel uneasy, or unsure. However butterflies are not what we actually feel in reality. What we experience is the perceived outcome of an uncertain challenge that lies ahead. Is that how we should really feel? What about the feeling of pure excitement when opening a gift before it’s ever opened? What about the way we feel when we know something ‘good’ is just around the corner, but we don’t really know what the ‘good’ thing may be?

We all experience this, the ‘butterflies’ of excitement. The ‘butterflies’ of uncertainty. And when we go through an experience that we were at first unsure of and find out that we are ‘okay’ in the end, we realize that our own unknown ending is not only ‘not that bad’, but rather quite good.

Butterflies. When we see one, we smile. Let us take the ‘butterflies’ that we feel in our stomach, and transform them into a beautiful creation we can be proud of. The butterflies of joy, the butterflies of happiness, the butterflies of success.

You are the butterfly…therefore allow yourself to spread your wings, …and fly.
