Irene was home lying in her hospital bed and one of her past colleagues and close friend was at the house to spend time with her. At this point, Irene was only communicating infrequently, but she was still able to understand everything. I knew that because if I told her something funny she would laugh.
We already knew that Irene had a limited time left on this earth and time was precious. Carol was a wonderful friend who had lost her husband just a few short years ago so she understood the importance of end-of-life care.
I walked into the living room and sat on a nearby couch along with a small cupful of Skittles and eating them one at a time just as I always do. Carol was engaged with Irene and shared past stories and memories with her. It was beautiful to see, Irene’s eyes open wide, she was smiling and listening intently to her friend.
Irene was conscious of her surroundings, glanced in my direction, then looked back at Carol and “My husband is eating Skittles.” The three of us laughed together because I was indeed eating Skittles.
Her statement was simple, but it left me with a powerful and joyful memory that I will cherish forever.
